Insurance Security Compliance

A Locksmith's Guide to Insurance Security Compliance

Stay Compliant. Stay Covered. Stay Secure.

Your home insurance policy may demand specific security measures — but are your locks really up to standard? Outdated policy wording can leave you confused and under-protected.

CraftLock is here to help you understand, meet, and exceed insurance security requirements, while also strengthening your home’s real-world defence against burglary.

Understand the Small Print — Avoid Big Problems

What Does Your Insurer Actually Require?

You must always be guided by the written agreement you have with your insurer and whatever policy documentation they provide you. Unfortunately the wording of policy documents is often out-dated and often fails to differentiate between traditional wooden doors and modern door locking types.

Wooden Door Requirements:

The “Five Lever Deadlock” Standard

For traditional timber front or back doors, insurers typically require one of the following: A 5-Lever Mortice Lock or a 5-Lever British Standard Mortice Lock (BS3621 or BS8621).

🔑 How to Check: Look at the metal faceplate on the edge of your door. If it’s marked “2-lever” or “3-lever,” your lock is not insurance compliant and needs upgrading.
A British Standard lock will usually show a heart-shaped BS kitemark logo — a clear sign of compliance.

💡 Note: Upgrading a mortice lock often requires detailed woodwork and takes 1–2 hours. Our locksmiths carry out this work to a high standard, ensuring a clean and professional finish.
Nightlatches: Only Modern British Standard Nightlatches May Comply
If your door is secured only with a nightlatch (Yale-style latch lock), you may still fall short of compliance.

Only certain high-security British Standard nightlatches are accepted by some insurers — but always double-check your insurer’s position, as this is still not a mortice lock.
uPVC and Composite Door Security:

Multi-Point Locking Systems

uPVC and composite doors don’t use mortice locks. Most insurance policies will refer to “multi-point locking systems” — and may require a specific number of locking points (e.g. 3 or 5).

🔑 The Cylinder Isn’t Always Considered: Ironically, your insurer might ignore the lock cylinder, even though it's the most common point of attack.

A British Standard or even anti-snap cylinder may not be required for insurance compliance — but it is absolutely essential for real-world security.
Don’t Overlook Your Window Locks
Many insurance policies require all accessible windows to have key-lockable handles. Some escape windows (usually upstairs) may use push-button mechanisms instead.

No keys? We can cut replacements or replace handles with new keyed versions.

Always remove the key and store it out of sight — burglars have been known to smash glass just to reach and turn the handle.
Meet the Minimum — Then Strengthen the Rest

Insurance Compliance ≠ Real Security

Even if you’ve met your insurer’s checklist, your home may still have critical vulnerabilities like:
  • Cheap lock cylinders on uPVC doors can still snap in seconds.
  • Old multi-point locking strips may no longer align or engage fully.
  • Timber doors may lack frame reinforcement or hinge security.

That’s why CraftLock recommends a full home security survey to identify real threats — not just tick boxes.
