The Locks in Your Home

Your door locks are your first line of defence – but not all locks are created equal. Whether you’ve just moved in, are upgrading your security, or want peace of mind that your current locks are doing their job, understanding the type of lock on your property is essential.

Different doors require different security solutions. UPVC and composite doors usually feature euro cylinder locks as part of a multi-point locking system. Traditional timber doors often use mortice locks or nightlatches – but there are various styles, standards and grades within each category. That’s why it’s important to understand what you’ve got, and whether it’s truly fit for purpose.

Locks for UPVC & Composite Doors

Euro Cylinder Locks

These locks form the key-operated part of the multi-point locking systems found on most modern UPVC or composite doors. While the door itself may have multiple hooks, bolts, and rollers along its length, the euro cylinder is the critical component – and often its weakest link.

If a criminal defeats the euro cylinder by snapping, drilling, or picking, they can bypass all those additional locking points and easily gain access to your home.

What you want is a high-security, anti-snap euro cylinder, ideally certified to Sold Secure Diamond Standard or TS007 3 Star Standard. These offer significant protection that goes far beyond the standard locks found in most DIY stores.

Let CraftLock fit your locks properly to ensure maximum reliability and years of secure use.

For Wooden Doors

Mortice Locks

A traditional British favourite, mortice locks are installed into a recess (or mortice) in the edge of a wooden door. You’ll often hear them referred to as ‘Chubb locks’, though that brand no longer exists.

If you have a mortice lock, it should be a British Standard 3621 lock – especially if your home insurance requires it. This standard ensures it has the necessary security features such as anti-pick mechanisms, a hardened steel bolt, and a five-lever locking system. And yes – even that internal door leading to your garage should comply.

There are many sizes and variants of mortice locks, so professional fitting is essential – even for a simple replacement.

We offer free inspections and can confirm if your locks meet insurance standards. When fitted properly, a BS3621 mortice lock remains one of the best mechanical locks available.

"Yale Locks"

Nightlatches

These are spring-loaded locks mounted on the inside surface of the door, allowing you to open the door from the inside without a key. Commonly referred to as "Yale locks", nightlatches are widely used in the UK and are often paired with mortice locks for added security.

However, not all nightlatches are equal. Some look identical but behave very differently depending on their internal mechanism. Installing the wrong type in the wrong setting can compromise your security or simply make day-to-day life more frustrating.

If you’re constantly getting locked out by your nightlatch, there are modern, user-friendly alternatives we can recommend and fit for you.

As MLA-Approved locksmiths, we can identify and install the best option for your needs. Send us a photo of your current lock or book a free survey – we’re happy to help.

Ideal for Flats & Upgrades

Euro Mortice Deadlocks

This hybrid lock style combines the benefits of mortice lockcases with the convenience and flexibility of euro cylinders. Commonly found in flats and apartment doors, euro mortice deadlocks allow you to upgrade to high-security, key-controlled systems with copy protection and enhanced resistance to attack.

Upgrades can include armoured escutcheons and BS8621-rated lockcases, which are especially useful in flats where a secure yet fire-compliant escape mechanism is required. These locks are a smart choice for both landlords and homeowners who want improved security and key control.

⚠️ Important Note: Modifying a fire-rated door in a flat must be done with care. Our expert team can advise on compliant solutions and fit additional fire-resistant materials when needed.

If you’re managing multiple properties, this style of lock also allows you to implement key accountability systems – ensuring only authorised copies of keys exist.
