Common Lock Problems For The Householder

Many lock problems can begin with something that is not a major issue and is relatively straightforward for a locksmith to fix. Unfortunately, when you ignore lock problems, they consistently turn into more lengthy and expensive emergencies! It’s best to get a locksmith to take a look at your lock/door issue as soon as it arises, rather than ignoring it until you have a critical security risk to your home.  The price of the most basic locksmith services for door repair start at £70 but may go up to around £250 for technical opening and repair procedures with replacement of the complete locking system and ancillary components.

We recommend 'WD40 Spray Lubricant with added silicone' for maintaining many of the lock items around your house.  See our detailed maintenance guide here.

"Great communication, very polite and courteous. Written quote and agreement in advance. Would not hesitate to recommend or use Ewan again for any locksmith works. Thank you." Customer in Birmingham, March 2020

My Key Won't Turn

There are a number of reasons that a key will not turn in the lock. A key or lock that is overly worn will put you in danger of breaking your key and/or being locked out.  Poorly cut keys will struggle to rotate in your lock, however if you have already given a badly worn key to the key cutter then they can only re-produce bad copies and won't be able to help you.

Alternatively, it could be nothing to do with your lock or your key. Locksmiths frequently deal with faults, wear, or even seasonal changes that can make your door stuck within its frame and unopenable - or uncloseable! This can stop your key from rotating, and leave you, once again, in danger of breaking your key and being left with a stressful security emergency.

A new barrel can be installed in your UPVC door from around £97 depending on the security level you require, this will eliminate many of your wear and tear problems and make the door feel like new!  CraftLock locksmiths will help you find the best solution to keep you safe and worry-free.  We are also an Approved Company Member of The Master Locksmiths Association, so you can trust us to offer you the right answer without adding on unneccessary extras.  We take pride in an honest and fair service.  You can find our MLA details here: https://www.locksmiths.co.uk/find-a-locksmith/craftlock-ltd/

Broken Door or Broken UPVC Window: Handle Doesn't Move Properly?

"My window handle doesn't move!" Whatever you do, don't force it - it could make things so much worse!  A door handle or a window handle may not move properly, or not at all.

In this situation you can often be up and running with a fix to the door’s various adjustment points. Equally, handle problems can also be an indicator of a more serious mechanical breakdown.  Most of the time, this is not a problem with your handle and replacing this will not help.  A new set of handles is often available to match your originals however and can be really great to freshen up the look of your door.

When window handles are completely stuck then these can sometimes be replaced however it is often required to remove the whole window sash and replace the miniature multi-point lock found within the window underneath the plastic surface.

Have a chat with us over the telephone and we will be happy to describe the types of work that will make your door or window work correctly.
